Throughout the era of European colonial presence, the Bassa Mpo’o Bati were able to take advantage of Christian missionaries to attain a Western-style education, particularly from German Protestants and American Presbyterians. Additionally, they played a lead role during decolonization, and their region was a hotbed of radical anti-colonial nationalism, particularly the Union des Populations du Cameroun (UPC). However, the Bassa Mpo’o Bati brand of anti-colonialism ultimately lost out during the creation of the postcolonial nation of Cameroon.

In Cameroon the total population of the Bassa Mpoo Bati is about 800000 individuals. They mainly live in rural areas of the Littoral and Center regions. Poverty is still prevalent. A lot of these communities still lack the basic infrastructure in the areas of education, healthcare, potable water, energy and access roads.

The Bassa-Mpo’o-Bati people have a rich culture and traditions.. Ngog Lituba, or “Pierced Stone”, is considered the cradle of Bassa people of Cameroon. It is an immense rock formation that is situated in the Nyong and Kellé Division in the Center region of Cameroon. The legend is that the Bassa took refuge inside to escape extermination from the Foulbe people. Therefore they owe their survival to Ngog-Lituba. That is why Bassa Mpoo Beti people from Cameroon refer to themselves as Mbog Liaa or People from the Pierced Stone.
